1. Kanangra Restoration Committee (KRC)
The next meeting of the KRC will be held aboard Kanangra on Thursday 5th July 2007 at 1000hrs.
Items for discussion will include short term work and plans, followed by a session to consider longer term plans and preparation of a Master plan for restoration and usage of the vessel.
All interested parties are welcome and also encouraged to attend to lend their voices to the development of this plan. Initial stages will be to gather a small feasibility study on expected use, and then expand to a full scale Master Plan to ensure that work proceeds systematically when John Oxley leaves the pontoon dock on completion of plating.
2. HULL
Monitoring of the hull, water levels, and pumping equipment continues on a regular basis. There is no evidence of sea water ingress at this time. The recommendation laid down from the May 2006 KRC meeting that an in water survey be carried out no later than the end of 2007 is still current.
NOTE: The KRC is still unsure of the procedures being followed regarding the recording of bilge levels. The status of the 110V DC ship's bilge pump is at this time unknown. Clarification on both these issues will be sought at the next meeting.
3. DECK TEAM REPORT - Michael Brock
Michael has provided the following summary of work achieved for the period to June:
For’d wheelhouse
- Awaiting replacement of necessary wooden supports
Aft wheelhouse
- Replacement of outer steps – continuing
- Plywood panels have been removed and the edges coated with preservative. Panels were then replaced.
Interior – Upper Level
- Work suspended temporarily
Interior - Main deck Midships
- Completed work on scraping paint off deck head area in section around aft gang plank and passenger transit to Waratah.
- Undercoat has been applied to this area.
- Continued scraping paint on port side “cavity” area between stairwells.
- Paint scraping of port side metal air vent, main deck.
- Scraping of paint and clean up of “Karrabee vents” beneath bench seating. These vents have a large access area to both the outer deck and also direct to the engine room. (Possible cause of Sydney Ferry race casualty when water was taken onboard, and they managed to evacuate the vessel at the Quay prior to partially submerging. These will need to be sealed. As well as two large ones on either side of the vessel, several smaller ones have been located beneath seating further aft).
- Close examination of starboard side of main deck revealed modifications that were made around the time of Kanangra’s conversion to Diesel. These included construction of the crews mess room, along with the uptake cavity for the diesel generator exhaust lines. This meant that the stbd side cavity was enclosed, unlike the port one which is still pretty much original.
Exterior – Lower Deck Port Side aft
- Work continued on scraping paint on outer bulkheads. This work is subsequent to original started last year requiring more detailed scraping.
- Work commenced on removal of outer deck seating which is beyond repair. It is envisaged that in service some of these seats may not be replaced to allow for wheelchair and frame access – for discussion.
Inventory
- Two offsite propellers recovered and returned to Rozelle yards - on pallets in yard awaiting permanent storage.
Volunteers
- New volunteer welcomed – Chris Fleming joins the Saturday crew.
- Col Tooher (The King) is taking a well earned break. Being a seafaring type he has departed on one of the Pacific P&O cruises! He chose the Queen's Birthday long weekend to depart – the mountainous seas were calling for him!
Problems
Future
- To be determined at next KRC meeting.

Starboard section of outer walling that has been moved outboard - underneath rear stairs - door runners are still visible in ceiling above paper sign
|
Crew mess room - panel supporting piping has moulding on both sides, and considered an original panel converted to a cupboard when crew quarters were added

Starboard side facing aft - showing modifications made within the "arch" to accomodate the crew mess

IN GENERAL..........
A reminder to all volunteers that OH&S needs to be given your full attention at all times. Prior to initially commencing work as a Kanangra volunteer you need to go through an induction for the vessel. If you haven't been through the induction then please contact Col Tooher, Michael Brock or myself ASAP.
Anyone wishing to get involved in the project please contact me at any time. If we all continue to plug away, it is not a matter of 'if, but 'when' we will see Kanangra cruising on magnificent Sydney harbour once again.
Stay Tuned!
