The Mariner - Newsletter of the Sydney Heritage Fleet

Page 2                 Number 56 Autumn 2005                A LIVING MUSEUM OF WORKING HERITAGE VESSELS

From the Editor

In this issue we are sporting the new logo of the Sydney Heritage Fleet. It’s in black & white here, but in real life it has had a colour change as well as a name change and is now in two shades of blue. The change of name recommended at the EGM of December last year has largely flowed through in the Fleet’s publications, signage and stationery.

As vessels are laid up over winter, steamings are curtailed and our list of What’s On is short. This does not mean that we don’t need volunteers. A great many activities continue, including office work. Contact the Volunteer Group at vservices@shf.org.au or 9298 3870. Volunteers enjoy benefits including meeting new people and free trips on the Fleet’s vessels.

This issue of Mariner sees us farewelling Hugh Lander as General Manager, who has retired because of ill-health. Hugh went out on a high, with the highly successful visits of Protex and James Craig to Hobart having taken place as a triumph of organisation and negotiation. We appreciate Hugh’s hand on the helm and his collegial style of management. We wish Hugh well in the future and know he will continue to make some of his talents available to the Fleet!

Which leads straight into a warm welcome for Hugh’s successor as General Manager, Jon Simpson.

Artist Ian Hansen has painted a fine picture of the James Craig, which he generously donated. David Mitchell is making it possible for you to buy a copy. Details are in this issue.

Art Union 119

There’s another Porsche Boxster on offer in the Fleet’s 119th Art Union, to be drawn on 23 September. A vital source of ever-needed funds, the Art Unions have been running for some 30 years. Why not have a go! A ticket is $50 and if you miss out on the Porsche, there’s a 4-night ‘long weekend’ in Hawaii, or a Stay/Sail holiday week in the Whitsundays as additional prizes. Call 1800 028 393 for your ticket or buy on line at www.shf.org.au

Harman

Harman: We celebrate a hard-working money-earner (notably with Fish ’n Ships). Pictured as a finalist in the best-dressed boat competition on Australia Day, Harman was awarded a flag and a plaque.

Fleet Fundraising Dinner a Success

At a gala dinner attended by nearly 300 guests on the 17 May the Fleet celebrated its existence whilst at the same time reflecting on the need for financial security. Our distinguished guest speaker was famed America’s Cup yachtsman Dennis Conner, who flew from his home in San Diego especially for this event. He was introduced by erstwhile nemesis Alan Bond. MC was Richard Morecroft, and Vice-President of the Fleet, Tony Hunt, welcomed guests to the dinner.

A very successful auction conducted by guest James Grice helped raise funds for the Fleet. Our special thanks go to Owen Glenn, Chairman of OTS Logistics group, whose generosity as Dinner Sponsor ensured that the event got off to a great start. We also thank all those generous donors of auction and silent auction items for their support.

Volunteer Group meeting

Members and volunteers gathered at Wharf 7 recently for the introductory session of the Volunteer Group. Volunteers now man the VG desk at Wharf 7 and the direct line telephone number is 9298 3870

Marketing Volunteers

Most members will be aware that, following a staff rationalisation last year, we dispensed with the services of a full-time marketing manager. Whilst we have been able to live with that for the most part, we are not necessarily selling the Fleet to best advantage.

The Board suggested checking with members and volunteers to see if the necessary marketing/sales skills reside within our ranks and could be offered on a volunteer basis. As a result, a small working group has been established. Others are welcome.
