Return to Eden?
Following her successful voyage to Hobart and return, it is hoped that James Craig will visit Eden again later this year. A number of conditions have to be met, but there is little doubt about the keenness of the crew.
Sale of Gretel II
Gretel II, built in 1970 and in the Fleet as the last of the wooden 12-metre yachts, has been sold under an arrangement which ensures that she will be fully restored to racing condition and will remain on Sydney Harbour. The resultant funds will be put to good use for the benefit of the Fleet. The original donor, Gordon Ingate, is very pleased with this outcome.
Short Course on Ropework and Rigging
The next SHF course on ropework and rigging starts on 20 September, running for six weeks on Tuesday evenings.. The fee is $100 for a member, $250 for a couple.
As use of the premises is donated by the Australian National Maritime Museum, almost all the value of the fees goes to the Sydney Heritage Fleet.
We usually have about seven tutors and twenty students, giving a ratio of one tutor to three students: this we find is very satisfactory for teaching.
The courses are aimed principally at yacht sailors and other boaties and cover skills such as:
- - basic knots, bends and hitches
- - whipping and seizing
- - splicing rope and wire
- - swaging wire rope
- - netting.
If you want more information or want to book a place in a course, phone the Sydney Heritage Feet on 9298 3888.

Vessels Laid Up
Re-laying Boomerang’s deck, well in hand as the picture shows, will take her out of action for several months. Waratah, too, is in a lengthy lay-up and, as already described elsewhere in this issue, Lady Hopetoun’s boiler works will keep her alongside for some time yet. (Picture: Andy Munns)

We need volunteers to act as tutors. Don’t be reluctant because of not being perfect: it’s a good chance to consolidate your skills. Contact me on 9905 2562 or Morrin Grigg on 9871 7919
Tom Mort
A special correspondent taking the course adds:
What greatly impressed me was the availability and skill of the volunteer tutors. With Tom, these helpful stalwarts of the SHF made a great team.
It’s also great to know that most of the fee goes to the Fleet.
The course made allowance for students to work at different rates. Useful equipment was available, like sharp needles. There were many helpful hints, like how to avoid putting these into your fingers and, as a last resort, sew with red canvas. An important subject on the last session was splicing the main brace.
Recommended.

Protex at Heritage Afloat
Protex charmed visitors at the Heritage Afloat Festival held at Toronto, NSW, over the Easter weekend. She carried 496 passengers for donations of $615. The organisers of the festival would like her to appear regularly in future.
James Craig Reeelers
People who sail on the James Craig enjoy hearing shanties performed. When heaving lines alongside the crew, passengers experience the way in which a shanty makes work easier.
The James Craig Reeelers have now produced their début CD album, a delightful selection of sea songs which create the atmosphere of a working ship or sailor tavern ashore. For your copy, send a cheque for $17 made out to Parbery Maritime to: PO Box 60, Millers Point, NSW 2000 and your copy of this salty album will be mailed to you!
Contact ‘Jimmy Parbuckle’ at jamescraigreeelers@shf.org.au or by phone on 0428 772 722.
