The Mariner - Newsletter of the Sydney Heritage Fleet

Number 63 Autumn 2007                     A LIVING MUSEUM OF WORKING HERITAGE VESSELS
From ...
 the President

We are, of course, a volunteer organisation and we sometimes forget that our survival and success quite often rest on the shoulders of our very few paid staff. Our reliance on these few is brought into focus when they, on perfectly reasonable grounds, decide to leave us. In recent times we have lost two stalwarts.

Many will have got to know Vern Tullipan from his early days in the James Craig restoration team and his subsequent move to the Shipyard. He and his partner have taken up property near Coffs Harbour and we could hardly expect him and his trusty motorbike to commute from there. Vern is a man of many skills but to me his most enduring was the ability to work pleasantly with others, even grumpy old men.

Peter Gregg has worked with us on the Craig team, playing a vital part in the early establishment of crew training and rostering and planning the ship’s activities. Since his move to the Shipyard we have seen significant achievements in the efficiency and effectiveness of ship maintenance and in the vital business of safety. Peter has decided to take up a business in the Pittwater area close to his home and sailing base.

On behalf of all members and the Fleet I thank these two blokes for their efforts over many years and wish them fair winds in new endeavours.

Congratulations
to
Tim Swales

What a great night on 2 March when James Craig was the venue for the Fourth Harbour Week Awards, hosted by NSW Maritime.

Our own Commodore, Captain Tim Swales, was honoured with the presentation of the Heritage Award for an outstanding contribution to restoring, preserving, lobbying for or establishing a heritage experience.

I don’t believe that all members are aware of the tremendous amount of work Tim does. In addition to being Commodore, he is Chairman of the Fleet Committee and a regular master of two Fleet vessels, Waratah and Lady Hopetoun. He represents SHF at User Group meetings held by NSW Maritime and single-handedly and at great cost to personal leisure time re-wrote the Fleet’s Ships’ Standing Orders, which cover all aspects of vessel operations.

I am sure that there will be many members who will join with me in congratulating him on his award.

Development Manager
