These practical courses run for six weeks, on Tuesday evenings from 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm

Course 1 content: 23rd February to 30th March

  • Knots, bends, hitches, whipping and splicing
  • Construction of traditional and modern rope
  • Eye splicing double braided rope
  • Splicing wire to double braided rope
  • How to make nets
  • Repair of sails and awnings

Course 2 content: 27th July to 31st August

  • Advanced knots, bends, hitches and splicing
  • Seizings, lashings
  • Rigging protection

Course 3 content: 26th October to 30th November

  • Ornamental rope work
  • Practical, decorative ropework
  • Bellropes, fenders, mats etc.

Where

  • in the Peter Doyle Learning Centre in the main building of the Australian National Maritime Museum

Time

  • Tuesday evenings 6 pm to 8 pm

Transport

  • parking is available in the bus parking area next to the museum
  • public bus (443) from the city terminates at the museum
  • ferry, tram and monorail have stations within easy walking distance

Equipment

  • With a few exceptions, that can be purchased at the course, all tools and materials are provided.

Cost

For each course;

  • $ 160.00
  • $ 145.00 for students and ANMM members.
  • $ 125.00 for Sydney Heritage Fleet members.
