Memorial Ceremony for Captain Bruce Hitchman

Skipper's ashes scattered at sea in a moving ceremony

In a traditional ceremony on Sunday 10th August, the ashes of the late Captain Bruce Hitchman were scattered from Barque James Craig by his two daughters Sally and Kylie.

Around 50 of Bruce's family and friends and around the same number of crew went to sea for the ceremony during which Executive Master, Captain Ken Edwards read the mariner's version of Psalm 23 and the wonderful poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson - "Crossing the Bar".

The day had dawned fair with the promise of a good sailing breeze and a calm sea. Moments after the ceremony was concluded the heavens opened and the breeze turned into a "crack-it-on Hitchman" 35-knotter.

Not long after that the skies cleared as we returned to James Craig's berth at Wharf 7 alongside the Museum. Few among those present thought anything other that this was the kind of send-off that Bruce would have appreciated, if not, orchestrated.

Before guests disembarked Hugh Lander presented a copy of the Hornby Light Award to Mrs Hitchman. Bruce, and two other Sydney Heritage Fleet members, Hilary Hansen and Bernie Norington, won the award for Community Service in the 2008 Sydney Harbour Week Awards.

International Paints makes major donation

International3 (35k image)

Once again the Fleet has been the recipient of generous support, this time from International Paint whose Marine Manager, Mr John Crossen has arranged for us to receive, each year marine paint, free of charge, up to an annual value of $5000.00 with additional requirements to this amount being provided at a 30% discount to commercial prices.

We recommend International (marine) Paint to all our boat-owning members in the knowledge that the quality and durability of their paints are well proven and in the belief that, wherever possible we should support those who support us.

Sincere and heartfelt thanks from the Fleet go to Jon Crossen and International Paint. In recognition of the generosity of this gift International Marine Paint has been made an Honorary Corporate member of the Fleet for the next year.

Wormald1 (35k image)

Once again the Fleet is indebted to our very good friends at Wormald Fire &Safety for checking and servicing all the Fleet’s fire extinguishers at our Wharf 7/James Craig and Heritage Shipyard sites and for providing some hose reel equipment..

Wormald has carried out this valuable, Free-of-Charge, service for several years now and it is with such generosity from so many of our supporters that we continue to make ends meet.

On behalf of the Board and members of the Fleet we thank Mike Brown at Wormald for their help.
