Lynn Mallett, Executive Secretary of the World Ship Trust visits Sydney Heritage Fleet
Vice President of the World Ship Trust and Patron and Life Governor of the Sydney Heritage Fleet, Mr Robert Albert AO RFD RD recently welcomed Lynn Mallett to Sydney. Lynn will probably tell those of you who will listen that the Sydney summer weather was just like a London winter but not a bit of it. Lynn spent several days with us and while here also visited our larger but younger sister, the Australian National Maritime Museum. Robert Albert was pleased to be able to arrange accommodation for Lynn at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron and, on her first evening here he hosted a pleasant dinner at the club for Lynn, Admiral Tony Hunt, President of our Museum, John Diacopoulos, Director and myself. Lots of heroic tales were told and we all had a great night.
On the following Wednesday we showed Lynn over our Heritage Shipyard where most of our vessels (not James Craig) are berthed and where all our restoration activities are undertaken. I believe that Lynn left our yard mightily impressed with what we are achieving there and she was particularly interested in our current project, the restoration of the 1927 coastal steamer and buoy tender John Oxley (see http://www.australianheritagefleet.com.au/JoOx/JoOx.html ). Later that day we took Lynn out on our 1903 schooner Boomerang, recently fitted out with a new deck, for a delightful harbour cruise and luncheon and in the afternoon visited our offices, artefact collection and James Craig at Wharf 7.
All in all we enjoyed Lynn’s visit immensely and hope that it will not be too long before we see other members of the World Ship Trust out here.
