Sydney Heritage Fleet Gala Fundraising Dinner
Special Invitation
Rear Admiral Tony Hunt AO, President of Sydney Heritage Fleet, cordially invites you to join him “at the Captains Table”.
Sydney Heritage Fleet is a volunteer based and oriented organisation.
The Fleet is a not-for-profi t tax-deductible gift recipient (DGR) under Australian
Taxation Office rules. We receive no direct government funding, either Federal,
State or Local, but we gratefully acknowledge support from the Australian
National Maritime Museum and from the NSW Maritime Authority.
The goals of the Fleet are best expressed by its Mission Statement which
reads: ‘To build and maintain an internationally recognised centre of excellence
in maritime heritage for the benefit of all Australians by presenting through
research, education, acquisition, conservation, restoration and operation,
our continuing maritime history’.
We have around 650 active volunteers who, annually record over 125,000
hours of invaluable service to the Fleet. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the
Sydney Heritage Fleet; without them we could not exist. However it is equally
true that we could not continue to exist without the wonderfully generous
support of donors, sponsors and our Patron, Mr Robert Albert AO RFD RD.
We seek your support through attendance at our Gala Fundraising
Dinner to keep the fleet afloat.
In an announcement certain to be of interest to all members of the maritime and boating community, Sydney Heritage Fleet is holding its next gala dinner, aimed at raising funds for the Fleet, at Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron on Thursday 15th May this year.
It will be a “black tie” affair with a fabulous 3-course meal prepared by the Squadron’s renowned chef served with excellent wines which have been donated especially for the dinner. The Guest Speaker on the night will be Captain Christopher Rynd, Master of the new Cunard Liner, Queen Victoria when she sails out of Sydney on 24th February this year, to resume her world voyage.
Captain Rynd’s talk is certain to be interesting as he shares with dinner guests highlights of his time at sea and tells “Tales From the Captain’s Table”.
In 2000 Rynd was promoted to Captain and has commanded Royal Princess (Now the Artemis), Pacific Princess (both the old and new ships to hold that name), Pacific Sky (based in Australasia), Regal Princess and Sapphire Princess. In 2005 he was asked join Cunard Line and took command of the legendary Queen Elizabeth 2 and the following year the Queen Mary 2, ‘the most magnificent ocean liner ever built’ and ‘the only way to cross’ the Atlantic. In 2007 he took up a command in the new Queen Victoria.
Sydney Heritage Fleet was founded in December 1965 with the acquisition and restoration of the VIP steam launch Lady Hopetoun, built in Sydney in 1902. Since then the Museum has authentically restored the steam tug Waratah, also built in 1902 and, the tall ship James Craig, built in 1874 and several other smaller boats including the 1908 inner-harbour ferry Protex and the 1956 built Manly speedboat Kookaburra and is currently restoring the 1927 steam driven, buoy tender and relief pilot vessel, John Oxley. We also have a large collection of static display boats, either fully restored or under restoration.
