John Oxley Restoration Appeal
What is this appeal for?
The restoration of the 1927 built coastal steamer is aimed at preserving, for future generations of Australians, a vital item of our maritime history. John Oxley, unlike many other heritage vessels, was never altered from her original configuration. She is a time capsule of early 1900s shipping with her rosewood-paneled pilots' accommodation, original mast and derrick for working buoys and navigational equipment, coal fired galley, wooden boats and of course her quite large, steam powered main engine.
How will the funds be used?
They will be used to buy steel plate and other essential items to ensure that the restoration is completed. Sydney Heritage Fleet "employs" over 600 volunteers who, last year, gave a combined total of over 126,000 hours of service to the Museum.
Key areas of expenditure for funds donated:
- Purchase of steel plate. John Oxley requires several hundred plates at a cost of around $1000/plate
- Purchase of rivets
- Renovation of the engine room - boilers and engines
- Replacement of Decks
- Renovation of cabins, passageways etc.
Is this appeal tax deductible? Yes
Will I receive a receipt for my donation? Yes
