CANBERRA Paddle Steamer.
On 9 June at Echuca there was a commemoration of 90 years service and the restoration to steam of the paddle steamer CANBERRA. The CANBERRA, which started life at Goolwa in South Australia in 1913, has been based at Echuca since 1966. Powered originally by a Marshall steam engine, she has been diesel driven since 1971. Owner Max Vulling, and Captains Neil Hutchinson and Peter Garfield began a major project last year to refurbish the CANBERRA and return her to steam. A newly restored 1923 Marshall 14hp steam engine now replaces the original.?At a ceremony on the banks of the Murray at Echuca, attended by skippers and riverboat crew from along the rivers, Essie Nisbet, hostess on the CANBERRA since 1976, cut the ribbon to welcome people, including former skipper Pearl Wallace, to the CANBERRA’s return to steam.
