Sydney Maritime Museum – 50 Years of History

The Sydney Heritage Fleet was formed by enthusiastic volunteers  during 1965-1966 and has operated since then, under a variety of names, including for many years, as the Sydney Maritime Museum.

The business name was first registered as “Lady Hopetoun and Port Jackson Marine Steam Museum Limited“. This was changed in 1973 to “The Sydney Cove Waterfront Museum Limited“. In June 1985 the name was changed again to “Sydney Maritime Museum Limited“.

The timeline shown below details the many changes that have occurred during the first 50 years of the Museum which operates today as “The Museum that goes to Sea!“. Included in the timeline are links to other pages which will provide  more detail about the individual items.

This page and the attached photos will be updated on a regular basis during the months leading up to the 50th anniversary.
