James Craig Maintenance Bulletin 30.07.2015
Tom’s job is to keep a careful eye on the whole rig.
Hans, Juri, Richard and Ainslie undertake a monthly inspection of a section of the ship.
Hans checks over the mizzen mast, Juri the main mast,
Richard the jibboom and Ainslie the foremast.
Working with Tom and Shane, job lists are posted
based on the findings.
Here on the left: Ainslie’s inspection of the foremast last week confirmed that blacking is a high priority.
Tom’s wishlist item: In the next three weeks, have the whole of the foremast rigging blacked down.
Can we achieve this? Areas specifically highlighted by Ainslie’s inspection last week were:
The forecast looks good for blacking on Saturday.
The day sail has been cancelled, but you still have a chance to climb. Check in with Tom.
Here on the left: Opportunity exists for up to two lucky climbers to ride in a bosun’s chair with a brush and a can of blacking. Also needed – a responsible deckie to tend the riders, raising or lowering them as they need
A couple of handy tips for blacking:-
Bring clothes you won’t mind being decorated with little black spots and smudges at the end of the day. Be sure to black the ‘bits at the back’ where it’s hard to get to ….not just the bits that can be easily seen. It really does matter.
Other work aloft will see Sally setting ratlines – probably after lunch
Don’t want to climb?
You might like to work with Fiona on some much needed deck caulking.
or help Sally and Shane continue the work on the lower topsail yard.
Among this week’s achievements:
Engineers have cleaned the blake slip into submission
Final coat has been put on this section of the scuppers
More tween deck ceiling boards have been put on
Pictures and contribution from Mary Robinson
